BIO

Born in Southwestern Ontario, Canadian flutist Gillian Derer is an imaginative and versatile emerging artist known for her passion, dedication, and dazzling on-stage energy. In her final year at Western University, Gillian studies with Sharon Kahan and performs with the Western University Symphony Orchestra.

Gillian inspires as a soloist, with her most recent performance being her winning concerto accompanied by the Western University Wind Ensemble. She has been named the first place winner of the Senior Winds category at the Norfolk Music Festival twice, and her performance at her Junior Recital at Western University in 2020 earned her high distinction. She has appeared as a soloist on multiple recital and concert programs at Western University, including a collaboration with St. Cecilia’s choir in 2020.

Gillian is also an experienced chamber musician. She has performed in ensembles including Western University’s Chamber Orchestra and Divertimento Flute quartet. She currently plays with the Disinvolto trio and is the co-founder of the Western University Student Chamber Collective.

An avid learner, Gillian enjoys taking part in masterclasses and institutes around the world. She is grateful to have studied with some of the world’s most highly regarded flutists, notably Emmanuel Pahud, Jeanne Baxstresser, Lorna McGhee, Alberto Almarza, Soo-Kyung Park, Susan Hoeppner, and Jacinthe Forand. The Consummate Flutist in Pittsburgh, Pensyllvania and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada are among the institutes that she has participated in. Gillian was accepted to the prestigious TafelMusik Baroque Summer Institute in 2020, which was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19.

A believer in connection and community, Gillian maintains a large social media presence where she details her performance life and posts practice tips for flutists around the world. She also mentors a number of young flutists through her platform.

When not practicing, performing, or attending concerts, you can find Gillian at home with a good book, a coffee, and her houseplant collection. She is currently preparing her graduating recital, featuring works by Sergei Prokofiev, Ian Clarke, J.S Bach and Paul Taffanel.
